Zirion back again, it’s been like, a month I know, lots of stuff happened, and holidays happened.Visual Novel Primers is a new series of videos I plan on doing covering Visual Novels and Japanese PC Games.
These primers serve as a more informational set of videos covering a VN’s background information, an overview of the gameplay portion of the game (if it has one), and a section dedicated to tips and tricks to aid you in reaching the end of the game. The video linked will be covering Rance Quest Magnum, the 8th in the mainline series of Rance. Rance is a long-running series by Alicesoft that has just recently concluded this year with Rance X. Rance Quest is a fun tongue-in-cheek Visual Novel RPG by Alicesoft.
I'm a fan of the series, and hope you enjoy learning more about it.For people who’ve played the game already on this subreddit, this probably won’t be too useful, but I hope for newcomers this will perhaps entice them to check it out.If you want me to talk about any other games in the series (go into more detail, talk more about the story and characters), or make a primer on an entirely different series throw me a comment. Big Rance fan and will be down to talk about them in any way. I know I didn’t really do justice to the sheer amount of humor that is in the game due to the kind of video I decided to make.Subscription link below if you want to see more of this kind of content.
Every bit of support counts!Feel free to leave a comment either here or on the youtube video itself, I'll read it either way (that said youtube is preferred:P)See you hopefully next week with probably a more discussion related video. Also Happy Holidays to everyone here, and go spend time with your families and/or friends!Subscribe for future content!. Honestly not much at the moment since I just started video making the previous month, and after making my Rance Quest video I basically peaced out to spend time with family for the past 2 weeks (just got back now though). I plan on covering a much older translated game pretty soon that is a personal favorite of mine, and I'll probably post a link to it on the subreddit when it's finished (sometime next week I imagine). If you want some game recommendations like right away though, check out my other youtube video on Steam VN recommendations.
Out of all the Rance games up for translation, I'm looking forward to Quest the most.Sengoku, IX and X all have a central story that is easy to get the gist of. But they're missing the smaller character stories that I really want to experience in Quest. But I gotta say, playing RQ on release with was pretty friken rough both because of the lack of English info on the Quests and the horrible Morurun conditions.Hope you make a video like this for X cause that ones a doozy to get into as well.
Yeah I probably will at some point. Rance X is legitimately one of my favorite games, and the game is actually pretty darn difficult.Alot of that might come from the fact that I'm a huge fan of the series (played every single entry in mainline), but I found the presentation, music, and gameplay to all be fantastic. I have went through every ending so I got a pretty good handle on the game.I'll work on a video for that and Rance 9 in future, will probably be a bit of time though since Rance X has quite a lot more to it then Rance Quest. Look forward to more stuff on my channel in the future:P. But they're missing the smaller character stories that I really want to experience in Quest.I find this sentiment very odd considering how much time in R10 is dedicated to these 'smaller character stories'.
There's a food ticket mechanic wherein you can view 2-3 short stories for each (canon) character, and all of those short stories add up to more text than what's in the entirety of Rance Quest just about, to say nothing of how many small character moments are in the actual quests of R10. Now that I think about it, you're definately right about the content in X.I guess my main issue with the meal tickets were that in my earlier playthroughs, I never went for them cause I had to dedicate most of my actions to surviving the war. And in subsequent playthroughs, it was difficult to roll the characters I wanted out of the chests. I also had issues where certain lv3 events were locked behind conditions that I never figured out (like one of the youkai girls). The grind just became too much for me, especially after beating part 2. It rolls into one of my bigger issues with X as a whole, which is the 16 turn limit.

It makes me feel like I have to rush through the game. I never felt comfortable just slowing down and trying to enjoy the meal tickets or the bathing scenes.Quest on the other hand, I really enjoyed the less intense atmosphere and the SoL feel of it. I found that recruiting old characters through their quests really fun and engaging since alot of then had unique skills rather than just a card in X.But maybe this is just me being burned out about X and seeing Quest with rose colored glasses. Meal tickets are a free action that do not impact how much you can do in the war.A lot of cards in RX have unique skills. Most quests to recruit characters in Quest tended to be very sparse in dialogue, with X easily beating it most of the time. Getting the characters you want out of chests can be rough, but most of the main characters are guaranteed drops so even when compared to Quest there's an equivalent amount of guaranteed drops that you can see food tickets for. Some rank 3 meal tickets have requirements, but not all of them, and even despite that, rank 1-2 meal ticket events still blow Quest the fuck out in terms of text dedicated to a single character.
And so on and so on and so on.No offense intended, but I think that's definitely just viewing Quest with rose colored glasses (excluding the less intense atmosphere, but that doesn't have anything to do with the 'small character stories' or anything like that, it's just personal preference for the tone of a work.). I think what he's trying to say is that, during a route when he had a choice between like a Meal Ticket and a War point/heal/EXP/whatever. In that sense I get where he's coming from. That said as I replied to IKKIROW's comment there was a patch later to allow players to view all meal ticket events at their leisure in the extra menu (with some pre-requisites).As to the 'rose-colored glasses point' I think the idea of Rance Quest being more special to smaller characters mostly came from the fact that Rance X crammed every character into the series into the game (and getting some of them were entirely up to RNG). Also who you got to spend a meal ticket on was randomly decided on by the game. In that sense they feel less special then in Rance Quest where you can go around picking them up at their leisure and view their events (if they have one) when you feel like it.That said yeah Rance X has alot more text, and even in Rance Quest alot of characters just kinda get thrown into your party.
Like one of my favorites Karoria Cricket:'(. Any character actually given any semblance of time in Rance X outside of Meal Tickets I felt were done very well.Edit: Busted out the game and am reading some of the 3rd ticket events, gives me some emotional feels:').
Actually, the 1.1 (1.2?) patch that came out a bit later added free Meal Tickets that allows you to freely watch all the character events in the extra menu (where you can do the challenge fights etc) So you can watch all of it. Although the characters you can see are limited to ones you collected throughout all your playthroughs and they have to be above rank 50.That said I understand that during the actual playthrough of Rance X, you would want to level up characters/cards of units to help you actually win the game, rather then just watch the fun stories.
Since you don't have any of the clear bonuses during the first few playthroughs. Subscribe on the channel and stick around then friendo As long as people keep watching I'll keep on making more videos on visual novels and other such gamesAlso, if you are looking for a Rance game to jump into the franchise with, check out Sengoku Rance. That one has an older english translation floating around by Takajun which is still a pretty solid translation. That's probably my favorite game in the franchise not including Rance X, and definitely one of the better games. It's game that made me fall in love with the series (and this medium) all those years ago.If you can wait, MangaGamer might officially come out with their english patch (although who knows how long they will hold on to it since they finished translation/editing quite a while and haven't released it for company reasons assuming)Also, thanks pal appreciate it:).
Sure I will subscribe however Rance is one of those series that you have no idea where to start because of how large the series is, I tried getting into it few years ago and found lots of charts and topics on which game to start so I decided to put it on halt for a while lol. Also 1 more question, did the series get some sort of 'remake'? I mean it is old so did it get some sort of improved graphics or something? Also I will be watching your video when I get back home but does it go in explaining what the series if about and how to get into it?Thanks. Well, it's mostly a guide on Rance Quest, however I do give a basic introduction to the Rance franchise in the first 4 minute.
In the future I'll probably make a huge Rance overview video. That said I'll try to sum it up pretty simply for you right here.Rance series is a long running series, Each game is basically a standalone adventure that can be played without knowledge of other games in the series. While characters come back time and time again, you can play any game in the series (except probably X) and come out with a satisfying experience. Each game has drastically different gameplay. Rance is known for amazing music, surprisingly solid gameplay, and great character interaction/world building. The mainline series is Rance 1/2/3/4 which are super old pixel graphics. These are freeware and translated but I wouldn't recommend them unless you really get into the series.Currently 1-3 have remakes with only the 2nd one translated. These remakes (aside from 2) completely revamp the gameplay and graphics but keep the basic story. They are probably the only ones going to remade (although who knows what alicesoft plans)After that is Rance 4.1/4.2/ Kichikuou Rance (Their Magnum Opus of the time)Then Alicesoft decided to reboot the series, continuing from 4 and ignoring the 3 other games in the series. So, 1/2/3/4 - 5D(Translated)/ 6(Translated)/ Sengoku Rance(7)(unofficially translated)/ Rance Quest/ Rance 9/ Rance XTL:DR You can play any game in the series to get a feel for Rance since they are all so drastically different, however out of the translated ones I recommend Sengoku Rance - Rance 6 - Rance 02 (remake).
Rance Quest which I also talk about is a good time, but a translation ain't out yet.Really any game in the series is a great point to start, except for Rance X since that entire game is like a massive love letter to fans and is not friendly to newcomers.Whew that took a while, I hope that clears it up for you, I also show a collage of different game play during the overview section.
